Indonesia was Beaten by Australian Media
Tickling news comes from Australian Media, The Sydney Morning Herald (SMH). This media highlight about COVID-19 in Indonesia. They gave a title: Indonesia: The world's next coronavirus hotspot is emerging next door. SMH criticized about poor handling on COVID-19. The media said that Indonesia lost on fighting Corona Virus compared to other countries in South East Asia.
The high number of cases in the last ten days (more than a thousand new infections each day) being the one that criticized. Furthermore, The low number of the test also become a spotlight by SMH. It is compared with countries like India which testing 4.530 tests per million people, Brazil with 11.302 tests per million people, and Indonesia only testing 2.123 per million people.
Testing capacity That Indonesia has done (only 10.000 people per day) rates as not comparable with the population. SMH illustrates that New South Wales which has 7.5 million people has the same amount of testing COVID-19 per day. The media also convey that decision to reopen the economy is a terrible policy amid the increased cases.
In line with SMH, Reuters also comment about the COVID-19 toll especially the dead number of children. Reuters reported that hundreds of children have died from the Corona Virus. On the other hand, the public official response to the COVID-19 was very dreadful. Minister of Health said that prayer can save the country at the beginning of the virus spread.
Besides that news, It is the second time SMH made negative news to the Indonesia government. Previously, SMH praised Jakarta Governor, Anies Baswedan in overcoming COVID-19. Anis is Equated with New York Governor, Andrew M. Cuomo who dares to the opposite with His President. In that news, the central government considered sluggish to control the Corona Virus.
This phenomenon raises a question, Why SMH pleased to write negative news about Indonesia? Whereas the percentage of infection compared with the population, Indonesia has a lower number than Australia (Worldometer, 23/6/2020).
