Sawarna beach is located at Sawarna Village, Bayah District, Lebak region, Banten Province. Sawarna famous because has much attraction. This destination usually crowded by local tourists at the weekend. You can reach out to Sawarna Beach by car or motorcycle.
Sawarna village has many beautiful sceneries such as a mountain, cave, river, and white sand beach. Sawarna Beach area starts from Pulo Manuk Beach to Karang Taraje Beach.
History of Sawarna Village
In this village, there is an old square grave with 1-meter height. The prominent painter from Holland named Jean Louis Van Gogh was buried there. This cemetery just found after the division of Banten Province in the 2000s.
In 1907, Van Gogh opening a coconut plantation in Tanjung Layar, Ciantir area. His plantation employed many local residents.
As time goes by, the number of workers increased and a group of habitant was formed. Their settlement named Sawarna, but because of differences in accent some said the word comes from Sundanese "soarna".
Nowadays, Sawarna visited by domestic and foreign tourists. They come to Sawarna and the number was increasing since the 2000s. It is because blog traveler who writes, share their photos and videos when visiting Sawarna.
Sawarna peoples are multiethnic, there are Javanese, Sundanese, and Banten. When plantations were developed, the workers are mostly migrants.
People used to work as a craftsman, labor, farmers, and small traders. Things change after Sawarna becomes a tourist destination. Many residents eventually become tour guides.
Regardless of the new face of Sawarna, this village has a dark history. Hundreds of thousands of Romusha died as a result of making the Saketi Bayah railroad track. The survivors are never come back to their hometown and choose to settle down and poorly the railroad track is no longer functioning.
